THE COMPANY
MLoDesigns Inc. was conceived in 2000 and has steadily evolved with an approach towards design which spans the scale from the smallest fasteners to entire buildings, and an enterprise that encompasses building maintenance to multi-unit developments.
The firm has undertaken residential and commercial projects as well as industrial design; utilizing materials ranging from fibreglass and epoxy resins to reclaimed lumber and structural steel, as well as found objects, bespoke features and experiments in advanced coatings such as “ion vapour deposition”.
MLODesigns Inc. has engaged the challenges of urban living with the focus of its projects in the heart of the city. The intention is to leverage a breadth of experience to find current solutions that provide effective and compelling spaces that are expansive despite their size.
THE ARCHITECT
Born the son of an engineer and social worker, Michael Lo's path to architecture and design seems to reflect the diversity of his parents. After initiating studies in chemistry, he completed a degree in Applied Arts from Ryerson University with a concentration in still photography, before going on to earn a degree in architecture. This education leans towards the creative but he still muses that “If I had studied physics instead of chemistry, I might still be there.” This spirit would underscore his leaning towards the practical and physical aspects of his work where tactility is ever-present.
A decade of working in offices gave Michael solid grounding in the mechanics of the discipline of architecture but consistent on site experience both professionally and personally has honed a dexterity when it comes to problem solving which mixes the practical with the aesthetic.
Michael utilizes a creative spirit augmented by years of “pushing nails” to create unique spaces. Maintaining and evolving a respect for materiality and context brings personality to all of his projects born of him, the site and the client. Special places for special people.
