PHILOSOPHY
Great design needs to speak to its surroundings and connect to both the past and the future. It is this evolutionary aspect of design that captivates me.
What I create is subject to the forces of its environment. It is modified and augmented by its use and what happens around it. Each component is an event in the much larger project of the built environment. Context is everything.
The urban landscape is full of these forces and the observation of it and the work that I have done within it is the education that I value the most. It has led me to become a fabricator, developing skills by working in different materials to understand how they work and wear so that I can design a better fit into the diverse conditions presented by the city.
Manufactured products are designed to be all things to all people due to economies of scale and mass production. This can provide good solutions some of the time, but there is never a shortage of unique conditions in the urban environment. I thrive on the attitude that with the right knowledge, everything can be looked at as raw material which opens up endless possibilities beyond the catalogue.
